Presentation
Saint-Saëns composed and published his first book of Three Preludes and Fugues, Op. 99 in 1894. He was not the first French composer to write preludes or fugues for organ, but of this scope and submitting to the requirements of the prelude and fuguepairing as practiced at the highest level by Bach and, subsequently, a Mendelssohn, the case remains unique in the annals of19th-century French organ music. Strictly differentiated, one from another, for an invigorating renewal of form (melody, rhythm,intentionally modal colour), these diptychs powerfully invoke the shade of Bach whilst masterfully fitting into Saint-Saëns’ time. Just as skilful and inventive on the writing level, the second book of Three Preludes and Fugues, Op. 109 was composed andpublished in 1898. Featuring writing that was airier but no less difficult to perform, it distinctly renews the genre through strictly individualized forms.
