Presentation
Concerning Cochereau, it is certainly not the slightest paradox to observe that, hailed and recognized as a master of improvisation, he saw this ‘burdensome’ (!) reputation unfairly overshadow that of the interpreter.
Yet, it is good to recall that his exceptional career as a recitalist (more than 2,600 concerts on five continents!) allowed him to introduce to the most varied audiences imaginable major organ works from Bach to Messiaen by way of Liszt, Franck, Vierne and Dupré to mention only them – and somehow finding the time, between his tours to record a good hundred discs!
But in this programme, made up of live recordings from the 1970s drawn from Notre-Dame archives of my husband, it is to the interpreter and him alone that we wish to pay homage. Moreover, we have, it seems to us, a precious asset: the pieces selected here, although played on many occasions all over the world, were absent from his present discography.
