Presentation
Although the role of women in the history of artistic creation has long suffered from terrible prejudice, music is perhaps the domain in which they have had the most trouble emancipating themselves. Indeed, literature was an art open to them from the outset. In music, on the other hand, the Old World long remained of a crass injustice. The 19th century was, in this regard, a century of transition; in fact, women musicians increasingly established themselves as performers as well as full-fledged creators.
The two string quartets proposed here by the Florestan Quartet are characteristic examples of this emancipation of the fair sex in the sphere of musical composition.
