Presentation
From Jacques Offenbach to Francis Poulenc, by way of André Messager, a large chapter in French music remains marked by what is too often perceived as the smiling mask of a lack of density, this music being criticized for precisely what is the basis of its primary quality: this seeming lightness, which remains the fruit of high refinement. Elegance remains the cardinal virtue of this art of understatement free of all emphasis or pathos. It evokes, and forgood reason, ’this tightrope walker in silver boots’ about whom Octave speaks in Alfred de Musset’s The Moods of Marianne, continually questioning the boundary between ’serious’ and ’light’ art, the latter effortlessly rising tothe level of the former through the constant care of which it is the object.
